    Description

Offered here is a small memorial-mourning card (a small pamphlet actually) for a German soldier, Ludwig Maidl who was killed in action on June 24, 1916.  It's possible that he was killed at the Battle of the Somme as the Allies began a week-long artillery bombardment of German defensive positions along the Somme River on that day.  Over 1.5 million shells were fired along a 15 mile front in an effort to destroy the German trenches. Using Google Translate I was able to decipher a good many of the words and he is identified as a "Sturmangriff" or stormtrooper and as an Iron Cross recipient.  The card measures approximately 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" and is in very good condition.  It's obvious that it has been pretty well cared for.
