    Description

Gorham is well known around the world for their exquisite sterling silverware, but what many Gorham collectors don't know is that they produced a sterling silver medal collection in 1976 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the USA.
Gorham produced 5,000 of these individually numbered sets in 1976 (this is #3737), but tragically many of these were melted down in the early 1980's when
    the price of silver spike
d to the equivalent of 0/oz in today's dollars (these contains just over 10oz of silver).  As a result, these are incredibly difficult to find, but are a must-have item for any serious Gorham collector - I've been unable to find another one of these for sale on Ebay or anywhere else on the web.  This collection is called "The First 13 Colonies Collection". Each coin has a hallmark on the edge of the coin which reads "Commemorating the Bicentennial of American Independence 1776-1976 Coined in Sterling Silver by the Gorham Mint".  Each of the 13 Colonies is represented by a portrait, a quote, and signature of one of it most famous citizens on the obverse. The reverse features the seal of the colony.  This set is presented in a dark blue leather like box that dramatically accentuates the splendor of the collection. Each coin measures 1 1/2" and struck in sterling silver is nestled in its own rich blue velvet formed niche.  The display case is in excellent, but not mint condition and measures about 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 1 1/2" deep and the the coins you will receive are as follows:
    Pennsylvania - Benjamin Franklin
    Rhode Island - Nathaniel Greene
    Connecticut - Nathan Hale
    New York - Alexander Hamilton
    Maryland - Charles Carroll
    Virginia - Thomas Jefferson
    Massachusetts - John Adams
    New Hampshire - William Whipple
    South Carolina - Edward Rutledge
    North Carolina - William Hooper
    Georgia
    -Lyman Hall
    New Jersey - John Witherspoon
    Delaware - Caesar Rodney
This is a quality collection that should be enjoyed, treasured and displayed before being handed down to the next generation (but in the meantime, be the envy of all your fellow Gorham afficianados).  Due to Ebay's picture limitations, I have not posted more photos, but additional pictures are available upon request and reasonable offers will be considered.  Item will be shipped via Priority mail and will be insured and require signature confirmation.  Thank you for looking.
