Boelcke was a 40-victory ace of the Imperial German Air Service and the first aviator to receive the coveted Pour-le-Merite, on 12 January 1916. He became a master tactician of aerial warfare at a time when their was no doctrine or rules and aerial warfare was in its infancy. Boelcke began his flying 2-seaters with FAA3. In November 1915 he transferred to FA62. It was while he was here that the new fighter, the Fokker Eindecker Fighter, began to make its appearance at the front. Boelcke along with Max Immelmann, began flying the new fighter and with it started scoring consistently. In the fall of 1916 as the Jagdstaffeln were starting to form he was given command of Jadgstaffel 2. He hand picked the men of his new unit and one new recruit was Manfred von Richthofen who whould go on to become the famed “Red Baron”. On 28 October 1916 Boelcke led his men in a dogfight with DH-2s of 24 Squadron and in the ensuing melee he and his close friend Erwin Bohme collided. Although it seemed only a slight touch Boelcke’s wing was damaged and in the ensuing crash landing his plane overturned and he was killed.
